Weston’s seafront was lit up as hundreds of women braved the wind to raise money for charity.

Weston Hospicecare hosted its rescheduled women-only Midnight 5k Beach Walk on Saturday.

The charity’s biggest fundraising event was initially due to take place on September 30 but the organisers decided to postpone the event following reports of bad weather.

But despite the threat of Storm Brian hitting Weston-super-Mare at the weekend, the walk went ahead and more than 200 women took part in the hopes of raising thousands of pounds for the area’s most popular charity.

The walk also gave participants the chance to remember their friends and family who may have been supported by the hospice.

The Grand Pier offered its’ Regency Suite to shelter the walkers from the cold during registration.

Instructors from Eden Fitness led a fun-filled warm up to get the ladies in the mood, who were dressed to the tens in luminescent clothes, tutus and glow sticks.

There was also live music from the band The Man from Funkle before people lined up at the starting line.

Mayor Jos Holder was on hand to start the race as participants took off down the boardwalk and onto the Promenade towards Uphill Sands.

The final amount raised has not been confirmed yet but the hospice hopes it will reach its £35,000 target.

Kelsey Dehaney, the charity’s events and fundraising officer, said: “The event went really well and we are pleased it was able to go ahead.

“It was a lovely atmosphere and we are so grateful to be able to be inside for the start and finish as that made a huge impact on the set up.

“It was quite moving at the end when the lanterns were lit to remember their loved ones in a moment of reflection.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the pier for all there help and support as they really helped us to make this event happen.”

This is the second beach walk the hospice has held since re-launching the event last year, under the sponsorship of the Grand Pier.

The first ever event was held back in 2007 before it had a three-year hiatus from 2013 to 2016.
