A WESTON man is planning to cycle 56 miles to raise money for a charity that supports his disabled granddaughter.

Chris Leaman, aged 52, has entered the Great Weston Ride Cycle Sportiv where he will ride from Bristol to Weston via the Mendips and Somerset Levels.

As well as supporting the ride’s main charity, Prostate Cancer UK, he is making the challenge more personal by raising money for Springboard Weston, which provides support for children with additional needs.

His granddaughter Lily May has a life threatening mitochondrial condition, which has left her physically and mentally disabled, and she is provided with support from Springboard.

Chris said: “She was not expected to live past a year and she is now two-and-a-half. It’s nice that I could do this cycle for myself, but it’s better to be able to get some money together for something so close to my heart. Her mum does a fantastic job in looking after her but is also grateful for the support she gets from Springboard Weston and the stimulating development attention they give to Lily.”

He is currently in training for the ride, and cycles around 70-80 miles a week.

He said: “I used to cycle quite a bit and started again last year with a cycle to work scheme. I wanted to have a go at some longer road cycling, and this ride had a charity angle and that gave me more incentive to do it.

“Knowing I’m doing it for a charity that’s important to me makes it easier to keep going when everything starts to hurt.”

Chris will be taking part in the ride on July 21.
