The Mercury’s Five Gold Rings competition started the festive season in style, with a lucky winner walking away with the perfect Christmas surprise in Weston-super-Mare.

Catherine West, of Canberra Road, was the lucky recipient of a £500 jewellery voucher after visiting the first late-night shopping event on November 30.

Hundreds of people flocked to the town centre for the switching on of the Christmas lights and to hunt for gifts, and Catherine walked away in disbelief after being presented with her prize.

She said: “It’s wonderful and such a big surprise. I’ve never won anything before, and I wasn’t expecting this at all.

“When I got the phone call I ran up the High Street to claim the prize. It’s fantastic, and it’s made my Christmas already.”

The competition is being run in conjunction with Weston Business Improvement District and high-quality Meadow Street-based jeweller Caboodle.

Caboodle owner Steve Finch told the Mercury he was ‘delighted with how the competition started’.

He said: “It’s fabulous. The lady had daughters as well so between them they will find some things to spend the voucher on.”

But if you were not lucky enough to have your name drawn from the hat, all is not lost.

Five Gold Rings will run at the late-night shopping events in the town centre each Thursday until Christmas, and all you have to do is locate the Mercury stand and enter the free competition by 7.30pm when a winner will be drawn.

A £500 Caboodle voucher will be given away each Thursday, except on December 21 when two prizes will be up for grabs.

Mr Finch added: “It’s brilliant to see so many smiling faces and I’m looking forward to the next three Thursdays.

“We’ve seen a fair few customers tonight, which is really encouraging and we’d encourage more to come into Weston on the next three Thursday nights because there are lots of really good shops where you can find all your Christmas gifts.

“After the success of last year we have expanded the competition. We have a shop in Burnham High Street called Antony James Jewellers and the voucher is valid in either of the shops.

“It’s a great time of year for people to win something as big as a £500 voucher because it is the time of year we are all looking for gifts.”
