Somerset’s most popular cycle path which connects Weston-super-Mare to Brean has scooped an industry award.

Brean Down Way won the highway partnership prize at the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) South Western awards.

The route was opened by Greenways and Cycleroutes Limited in July 2017.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, the deputy leader of North Somerset Council, said: “Brean Down Way is a good example of what can be achieved by working in partnership.

“This is a great community facility which is enjoyed by many people and provides a key link between Weston and Brean.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved for all their efforts in delivering this route and for receiving this well-deserved award.”

The cycle path is the most heavily-used cycling route in Somerset.

During its first seven weeks last summer, more than 28,000 riders were recorded crossing the River Axe sluices.
