Plans for a coastal cycle path connecting Weston-super-Mare to Burnham-on-Sea have moved a step closer.

Burnham and Highbridge town councillors voted unanimously to support the proposal to extend the Brean Down to Weston path to Burnham, Berrow and Brent Knoll.

The project is spearheaded by Greenways and Cycleroutes Limited, who also opened Brean Down Way in July 2017.

Town councillors Phil Harvey, Andy Brewer and Janet Keen met with John Grimshaw from Greenways to discuss plans to extend the route by creating a triangular circuit to join the three areas, at a cost of £229,000.

Cllr Brewer said: “This will create a safe route and get cyclists off Berrow Road.

“It is very exciting.”

Brean Down Way opened last year and proved extremely popular, with more than 28,000 trips recorded crossing the River Axe sluices in its first seven weeks.
