‘Ambitious’ plans to invest millions in homes and jobs in Weston villages

Investment worth £40million could help secure thousands of new homes and jobs in the Weston villages.
North Somerset Council will award construction contracts worth £33million to carry out work on three major projects, if the plans are approved at its full council meeting on Tuesday.
The authority could give £13million to Balfour Beatty to complete the North South Link Road in Locking Parklands, which would create access to build up to 1,800 more homes.
Contracts may also be awarded to Willmott Dixon to complete the Food WorksSW food and drink innovation centre and the 420-pupil Parklands Educate Together Primary School – deals worth £11.3million and £9million respectively.
The contracts are part of a £40million package to create more than 10,000 employment opportunities and 6,500 new homes in Parklands Village, Haywood Village and the Weston Business Quarter. More than £31million of this has come from grants and developer contributions.
Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader, said: “In these challenging economic times for local authorities and faced with rising costs in a volatile construction market, we have worked hard to secure external funding to finance these ambitious schemes.
“In setting the budget for these projects over 78 per cent of the total £40million cost is coming from external sources, representing excellent value for money to the council and residents of North Somerset.
“It means we have an affordable and fundable strategy in place to award these contracts for schemes which will stimulate growth in Weston by delivering much-needed jobs and new homes.”
Work on all three projects is planned to begin in November this year with all three set for completion in 2020.
An estimated end date of March 2020 has been set for Food WorksSW while the school is due to be finished in April, followed by the link road in November.
Cllr Ap Rees added: “We will continue to work with our private and public sector partners to bring forward growth in and around Weston by acquiring land, co-ordinating developments, negotiating developer contributions and securing public sector funding to deliver the necessary infrastructure.”
