A Weston-super-Mare woman who influenced the lives of thousands of young people has died.
Joan Carter died on November 20 at the age of 77, surrounded by her loved ones at her Addicott Road home.
Her husband, former North Somerset councillor and Broadoak headteacher John Carter, said: “She always made people feel welcome.
“She was very kind and all that mattered to her was family.”
Irish-born Joan leaves two children, Janie and Annie, and four grandchildren.
She moved to Weston in 1963 with John before becoming involved with the town’s youth groups.
The pair spent 20 years running an Army Cadets group at Broadoak, and John estimates the pair trained more than 5,000 youngsters.
Joan’s funeral will be held at Weston’s Corpus Christi Church, in Ellenborough Park South, on Tuesday at 11.30am.
