Yatwell under-16s came up against a powerful and well organised Winscombe as they were beaten 34-17 after a hard-fought battle last Sunday.
Having made really positive early breaks Yatwell allowed the Combe to barge through for the opening try.
Winscombe’s second came after they found a soft route through to the touchline.
But from the re-start, a short kick brilliantly taken by fly-half Jimmy Jackson-Patel and a quick ruck ball was passed to No. 8 Ned Hill, he set off round and through the defence to pull one back for Yatwell.
However, Winscombe shifted the ball out to a running player who escaped the first tackle and he slipped through to the line to make it 17-7 at half-time.
Winscombe added three scores before Yatwell fought back when rampaging prop Phil Clarke powered over to bring the visitors back in to it.
Moments later great work at the breakdown No. 8 Fergus McMeel showed tremendous strength to bulldoze his way over.
At this point it seemed almost inevitable, given the way Yatwell were playing, that they would finish with another score but when a loose pass was lost behind the receiver’s head Winscombe were able to pounce and hold on as the game finished in Combe’s favour.
