Winscombe RFC narrowly missed out on causing an upset at high-flying Old Centralians after falling to a 15-12 defeat in the Regional 2 Tribute Severn last Saturday.
The break through came when Winscombe were awarded a scrum on halfway. Returning No.8 Alec Chase picked up at the base before drawing both defending flanker and full-back to send scrum-half Lewis Podpadec free down the touchline to score in the corner.
Shortly before the half-time whistle Centralians made their one and only excursion into the Winscombe half, coming away with a penalty to go into the break 5-3 down.
The start of the second period was played out in stark contrast to the first. Old Centralians came out fighting, dominating both scrum and line-out and scored successive tries from Harry Preece and Jack Rowe to open up a lead of 10 points.
Try as they might and despite some excellent kicking to the corner by full-back Harry Power Winscombe could not close the gap.
A late try by flanker Oscar Browne earned the bonus point, but the visitors will rue the missed opportunities of the first half.
Winscombe entertain Chippenham this Saturday in another tough fixture before the Christmas break.
