Tribute South West Regional Two: Wellington Chiefs 15-26 Burnham-on-Sea RFC
BURNHAM-on-Sea RFC finished their league campaign with an impressive win over Wellington Chiefs at the Athletic Ground on Saturday, April 6.
Despite the win, the Stags finish the Tribute South West Regional Two division in bottom of the table.
However the season ended on a high with this win over local to the league rivals Wellington.
Burnham were without veteran half Tim Piper but otherwise were full strength going into the final game of the season.
The Chiefs went into the game missing a number of players including captain Danny Lee, whose hand is in plaster after an injury picked up last week.
The visitors were on top early and were the first to score as they went in front through a converted try ten minutes in.
However, the hosts pulled a try back through Ash Harney on the half-hour mark and the scores were 5-7.
The match was tense with only the two scores in the first 30 minutes however before half time it all opened up.
Burnham defied their lowly position with two more tries, one converted, to lead at the break 5-19.
In the second half, Callum Warren scored the Chiefs’ second try ten minutes in but this was again replied to with a Burnham converted try five minutes later.
Wellington kept pushing up the pitch to chase the game and Harney went over for his second try for the hosts with ten minutes remaining.
However, that was the end of scoring as Burnham held on to win the match 15-26.
A spokesperson from Burnham-on-Sea RFC said: "Thank you to all of our Sponsors who attended today’s game.
"Thanks as well go to all the Stag Faithful who also attended, a cracking game and credit to all the players, coaches, physio and everyone else who put in the effort for today to go as well."
In other news at the club, tickets are now available for the Senior Presentation evening to be held on Saturday, May 18.
It is £20 each ticket to attend the event as the club recognise all the achievements of players and staff this season.
The bar will be open from 5pm and then a two-course meal starts at 6pm which will be followed by speeches, awards and an auction.
After the formalities, there will be live entertainment from X Factor Contestant Joseph Whelan starting at 9.30pm until late.
To book tickets, you can contact the club through their website or Facebook group.
