Cheddar Rifle Club enjoyed a successive year on the range.
CHEDDAR Valley Rifle Club’s A team of Mike Griffin, Keith Thickett, Ruth Bell and Dave Oatley finished top of Division 1 of the Somerset 25 yard postal league, retaining the trophy.
The B team of Barbara Griffin, Simon Ellis, Tony Thwaite and son Alex were runners-up in Division 3.
In the Somerset Individual League, Mike Griffin was the runaway winner of Division 1, with Keith Thickett in second place.
In the Somerset Cup competitions, the club was also successful. In the Davey Cup for teams of eight, Mike Griffin, Ruth Bell, Dave Oatley, Trevor Paisey, Barbara Griffin, Paula Marks, Tony Thwaite and Keith Thickett beat Sedgemoor in the final and so retained the Cup for Cheddar.
The final of the Curry Rivell Senior Cup saw the Cheddar B team of Barbara Griffin, Tony Thwaite, Paula Marks and Pat Williams lose to Sedgemoor D. In the Mullings Cup final, the Cheddar A team of Mike Griffin, Ruth Bell, Dave Oatley and Keith Thickett beat Williton B.
Special congratulations should go to Pat Williams, who beat Ann Clancy of Westlands (and England) in the final of the Sally Lunn Ladies Individual Handicap Cup.
Club teams also compete in competitions in the Bristol and District Area and the A team of Dave Oatley, Tom Paisey, Barbara Griffin and Peter Jones finished third in Division 2 of the postal league.
Mike Griffin, Keith Thickett, Ruth Bell and John Harris were narrowly beaten into second place in the shoulder-to shoulder league. The B team of Dave Oatley, Simon Ellis, Barbara Griffin and Cliff Simmons finished third in Division 2.
A number of members have reached the finals of the Bristol and District individual cup competitions, which will take place during May.
Five club members represented Somerset in the national inter-county league, making up a quarter of the team of 20: Mike Griffin (who had the leading average), Keith Thickett, Ruth Bell, Dave Oatley and Simon Ellis.
Ruth Bell was in the Somerset County ladies team and Tom Paisey, Barbara Griffin and Alex Thwaite all shot for the County Reserves B team.
Cheddar Valley Rifle Club is an established and fully approved 0.22 calibre target rifle shooting club with their own 25-yard indoor range in the village. The club welcomes new members. All equipment needed is provided by the club.
