Top of the table Bishopston proved too strong for Weston, as the visitors struggled to put enough runs on the board.

Weston travelled to top of the table Bishopston at the weekend trying to regain their winning ways.

Luck was not on their side from the toss as they lost once again and were put straight into bat on a damp wicket.

Andy Fear and Tom Ford made a steady start getting Weston to 35 without loss in the first 15 overs, before Ford was caught in the slips. With Fear (55 not out) holding up one end, Weston needed Ahmed to stick with him, but he was eventually caught for 13.

Bishopston’s spinners came on and were able to use the conditions to their advantage and the sharp turn and bounce made it at times impossible to play.

Weston’s middle order seemed to collapse with no runs off the bat from five batsmen, with only Chris Davidson offering Fear any support as Weston struggled to 157-9.

With their strong opening bowling attack in Charl Willoughby and Sean Stringer, Weston were confident on getting the visitors on the wrong foot, but early chances were created but not taken.

However, Willoughby (8-1-15-2) eventually removed both openers in quick succession to get Weston back in the game at 27-2. Bishopston’s Coombes looked to take the game away from Weston and his aggressive stroke play on a drying, but still tricky wicket proved the difference.

He was well supported by the more patient O’Brien, who batted though despite wickets from Ahmed (5-1-25-2) and Fear (6.4-0-29-1).

It was a disappointing performance from Weston, who feel they should have done better despite the conditions.

Forte Financial man of the match went to Andy Fear.

On Saturday, Weston welcome Keynsham to Devonshire Road.
