Winscombe suffer narrow defeat in high-scoring encounter

Winscombe lost a basement battle by 13 runs against Taunton St Andrews in a high-scoring encounter.

Winscombe travelled to Taunton St Andrews for an important game at the bottom end of the Somerset Cricket League Premier Division.

Winscombe inserted the home team on a pitch with some initial variable bounce, which quickly flattened out. The home team were positive throughout their innings despite losing wickets at regular intervals including to Chris Clough (4-40).

Jack Fraser (3-40) exerted good control and was aided by a superb catch at slip by Coe to remove the former Somerset player Kevin Parsons for just 16.

With Jory Cureton, Rob Bradley and Siya Sowati picking up a wicket apiece the hosts were dismissed in the final over for a substantial 287.

Winscombe started positively through Fraser (43) and Sowati and Bradley (both 60) who showcased a fine array of strokes. Some huge blows from captain Ben Goodrum (43) got Winscombe close, but Rob Shephard (22 not out) could not quite get them over the line and Winscombe fell 13 runs short on 274-9.

They will hope to build on the fine batting performance to secure their first win against Shapwick and Polden on Saturday.
