East Worle secure the Weston and District League Division 1 title for the first time in 10 years.

Portishead Town A 2

IN a tense and nervy affair, East Worle secured the Weston and District Division 1 title thanks to a 92nd minute goal from Adam Abrams.

Joe Abdulgani’s goal in the 26th minute gave Worle the lead against already relegated Portishead.

After the break, East gave away a sloppy goal, but McKeever scored with a header after a Thomas cross rebounded off the bar to regain the lead. Another mistake gifted Portishead another equaliser.

As the game entered injury time, the ball broke for Abrams in a goalmouth scramble to score the winner.

In celebratory mood East Worle closed out their season against Selkirk at the Woodspring complex with a 3-3 draw thanks to goals from Damian Thomas, Steve Owen and club stalwart veteran Mick Reames.

This is the first championship win for East Worle in 10 years and they have now won the top division a total of 12 times since their first championship winning season back in 1985.

During the period 1985-1994, East Worle won the top division nine times in succession. The 12 league titles are added to the 10 Knockout Cup, eight Atwell Shield and 10 Hospital Cup victories since 1985.

Chairman Pete Allen said: “This win is particularly sweet for the club. We have not won the title for 10 years. I would like to thank managers Paul White and Mickey Reames for their hard work. My thanks also go out to Jill Pratlett and Pete Land, who have worked hard behind the scenes.”

Next year is going to be big year for the club. They are moving to Weston AFC where both the first team and reserves will play their home football. They are also losing manager Paul White, who is stepping down.

Kewstoke Lions 2

Clevedon Utd Res 2

KEWSTOKE came up against one of their toughest opponents of the season and matched them all the way in this entertaining match.

The home side were disappointed not to take all three points against the promotion chasing Clevedon side after they were leading 2-1 up with only eight minutes remaining

Ryan Fieldhouse and Ben Popperwell finished well to give Kewstoke the lead. Joe Green and Adam Brueford were solid in the middle and Ben Westgarth and man of the match Leon Brueford stood up well to the Clevedon attacks.

Kewstoke 2

Nailsea Utd A 2

KEWSTOKE faced another promotion chasing team within a few days and again conceded a goal in the final 10 minutes to force a draw.

The first half was poor from the home side with only two decent moves put together and the teams went into the break goal-less.

Kewstoke took the lead within two minutes of the restart. A great move resulted in Ryan Fieldhouse scoring. Kewstoke doubled the lead when another good move saw a Nailsea defender head into his own net.

However, as in previous matches, Kewstoke could not see out the result and individual errors cost them dear. Man of the match went to Ryan Fieldhouse.

Kewstoke look forward to a cup final against St Johns Sports Bar tonight (Thurs) at Winscombe.
