SPORTS Bar recorded another impressive cup victory to reach the last 16 of the Somerset Junior Cup.

The home custodian pulled off a stunning save early on to keep out a Danny Sprague bicycle kick from a Lee Nelson corner, but the energetic visitors were in control and an impressive double from prolific frontman Luke Page saw them hold a two goal advantage at the break.

Broad Plain’s only clear cut chance of the half brought a spectacular one-handed save from player-manager Hicks.

The opening 10 minutes of the second period were the only time when Sports Bar stepped off the gas and it resulted in Martin Platt pulling a goal back for Broad Plain.

As Sports Bar’s superiority told, Page had two goals chalked out by the home assistant’s flag and another goal from James Cleaves met with the same fate.

All players deserve equal praise and although it is difficult to single out one player, special mention must go to Matt Ware who made the journey from Southampton to play in the game and was rewarded for his efforts when he walked off with the man of the match award, sponsored by Edge Barbers.

Clevedon Dons 0

Worle Res 1

CLEVEDON Dons felt the impact of a new look Worle team, who took all three Division 3 points with a determined performance.

Man of the match Chris Loach’s leadership and organisation in the heart of defence with captain Gazza Lewis, Craig Young and Ben Anderson alongside, ensured that Worle kept its first clean sheet in two years.

In the centre of midfield, with the tenacious Lloyd Dean and the artistry of Mike Parker, Worle had plenty of possession and they combined well to launch attacks through the lively Jake Pickles and Luke Hussey.

Debutants Sam Jefferies and Elliott Wood led the line well and created opportunities for others and Worle should have scored more.

The decisive moment came when a speculative effort from Ben Anderson found its way past the Dons keeper. Worle held on, despite a late scare thanks to fine goalkeeping from Rob Bangham and Jack Coleman on the line.

Weston Players 8

Shipham Res 3

WESTON Players were back in Division 6 action against Shipham Reserves.

Shipham boasted a strong squad and took the lead with a well-taken goal after some confusion in the Players’ back line.

Carl Aldous made a couple of fine saves before Jim Owen levelled, his cross beating the keeper. Shipham regained the lead with another breakaway goal, but again Players levelled when Owen bagged his second with a penalty after Mark Ashmore was fouled.

End-to-end football saw the Players’ back line of Prior, Jones and Smith work hard and the imperious Aldous in goal tested regularly. Players got their noses in front on the half hour mark when Rich Skinner headed home from a Owen corner and he linked up again minutes later when his clever back heel was collected by Kev Ballantine, who squared for Owen to scramble home his hat-trick.

Substitute Tom Bush profited from a keepers error to make it 5-2, but Shipham pegged the score back with a scrappy goal. Ballantine headed home an excellent cross from Joel Page and Owen notched his fourth of the match, followed by another goal for Ballantine.

Some classy displays across the park with nods to Owen, Page, Ballantine and Skinner, but the Brean Angling man of the match award went to Carl Aldous.
