TEAM Mendip took two teams to the Brislington Football Club tournament and both teams topped their groups taking them into the finals.

The Under-12s made up of Maisie Lynn, Annabel Cunningham, Tara Young, Phoebe Hughes, Alysha Forsbrook, Dannye Fear, Nikita Monk and Erin Hale beat Avon Athletic, Bristol Ravens, Brislington, drawing against last season’s Bristol Girls League winners AEK Boco and runners-up Downend Flyers.

This was good enough to take Mendip through to the final against Downend. In the final, Downend started well and had plenty of possession, but Young and Lynn were outstanding in defence and there was no score in normal time.

After extra time both teams were still level and only penalties would decide the winner. Mendip finally won 3-2 in the shoot-out to win the tournament.

Frankie and Benny’s Player of the tournament went to Cunningham for her excellent play and five goals in the competition.

The Under-10s made up of Bonnie Gready, Lilly Stephens, Brooke Stirrup, Jessica Selwyn, Mollie Barnes, Abbie Delafield and manager Brett Greedy, beat Whitchurch Sports 4-0, Brislington Red 1-0, drawing their three remaining group games 0-0.

They amassed enough points to take them through to the final against Portishead. It was a close game with both teams counselling each other out finishing 0-0.

This left a nail-biting penalty shoot-out and after three penalties each it was still level, so it went into sudden death. Sadly Mendip missed and Portishead scored to take the victory.
