Weston gave another impressive display against Football League Division 2 opponents Plymouth Argyle.
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 3
WESTON gave another competent display against their Football League Division 2 opponents who were slightly flattered by the final score.
For the first half, manager Craig Laird left new signing Chas Hemmings on the bench, along with Dayle Grubb and Marcus Duharty. Chris Young led the attack and Ross Stern gave a sterling performance on the left side of midfield.
Weston created the first chance when Stern put Nat Pepperell behind the defender with a superb 35-yard pass on the ground, but he finished his run by firing narrowly over when challenged by defender Onismor Bhasera.
Minutes later Weston forced their first corner and from Stern’s flag kick Young headed just over.
Against the run of play, Argyle opened the scoring on 12 minutes when striker Jared Sims put wide man Joe Lennox through to beat Lloyd Irish from 15 yards.
As Weston tried to get back into the game, Stern forced a full-length save from keeper Ollie Chenoweth on 21 minutes and two minutes later central defender Curtis Nelson blocked Young’s shot on his line with Chenoweth beaten.
Four minutes before the break, Argyle forced their first corner and Irish did well to take Ladjie Soukouna’s heder over his head from Paul Wotton’s flag kick. However, Soukouna did better on the stroke of half time beating Irish from close range from another Wotton pass.
For the second half, both sides made a string of changes and Argyle picked up the pace. With their first attack, Argentinian triallist Andres Gurrieri cracked a shot off the home crossbar and they forced four early corners.
Weston kept battling away and were rewarded on 66 minutes when Grubb put Ashley Kington through to beat keeper Rene Gilmartin.
Minutes later, Argyle completed the scoring when Irish, coming off his line, took out the speedy Warren Feeney, who is an Northern Ireland international and Feeney beat the keeper from the penalty spot.
Weston squad: Irish, Price, Slocombe, Kington, Villis, Jamie Laird, Diallo, Trowbridge, Young, Stearn, Pepperell, Grubb, Hemmings, Duharty, McGregor, Callum Laird.
