Team Mendip’s improvement throughout the season was reflected in Sunday’s result against a Portishead side who were unbeaten in the South West Women’s League.

Twenty minutes into the game Becki King’s powerful header from a corner was ruled out by the linesman for a foul on the keeper. Mendip redoubled their efforts and were rewarded with a well-taken goal by Ellie Roberts.

Portishead had several promising attacks and the dangerous Shannon Holloway equalised with a burst of pace and excellent finish. The visitors took the lead with a similar finish, with Holloway again causing the damage.

Mendip dug deep and seemed to be determined not to give the game up and Roberts again provided the answer with a well-taken second goal.

Tireless work in midfield from both Tash Hale and Becki King kept Mendip in the game and when the ball broke to Mendip’s youngest player – 16-year-old Katie Sharkey, she cut inside and smashed in the winner from 25 yards out.

Becki King was voted PD & CL Building Services girl of the game for a super midfield display.
