With the start of the new National League South (NLS) season just a few hours away, Weston-super-Mare Football Club have announced the signing of four players.

Target man Jake Reid has signed on the dotted line and committed himself for the new campaign after joining the Seagulls from Chelmsford City midway through last season.

The 30-year-old was with the club for preseason, without committing to terms.

He is followed by a trio of new recruits in the shape of midfielder Jay Malpas, and forwards Giancarlo Gabbiadini and Shaquille Hunter.

Marc McGregor will take charge of his first competitive game in charge of the Seagulls against Poole Town today (Saturday), and his assistant welcomed the signings ahead of the game.

Rob Boyd believes the quartet ‘builds on the strength of our squad’ and ‘opens up a lot of options to the gaffer, especially in attacking areas’.

He said: “They have shown they can work hard on the training ground and on the pitch in the matches they have played in since we have started in preseason.”

Powerful striker Reid joined the Seagulls last season – scoring five goals – and is an experienced performer at NLS level having played for the likes of Weymouth, Bath City, Newport County, and Bromley.

Jay Malpas

Malpas arrives at the Woodspring Stadium off the back of a successful loan stint with NLS new boys Chippenham Town last season.

The 21-year-old learned his trade at Bristol Rovers, and is capable of playing as a number 10 or down the right flank.

Giancarlo Gabbiadini

The 18-year-old winger came through the ranks at Forest Green Rovers under the tutelage of former Seagulls boss Scott Bartlett, and also represented England Colleges.

He joins the Seagulls off the back of an impressive trial.

Shaquille Hunter

The 21-year-old striker was released by Bristol Rovers in 2013 and spent last season with Bath City – scoring four goals in 28 appearances.

Season opener

The Seagulls kick off their campaign against Poole Town today at the Woodspring Stadium.

McGregor’s side will be hoping to replicate the success of the opening day last season when Whitehawk were convincingly beaten 3-1 by the Seagulls.

Kick off is at 3pm.
