FOUR gymnasts from Weston Aerobic Gymnastics Club have have been selected to represent the club at a World Championship event.
FOUR gymnasts from Weston Aerobic Gymnastics Club have made history by being the first to represent the club at a World Championship event.
Matt Saunders, Abi Butterfield, Rhys Williams and Kiera Landen had to compete at two selection events this year, where they were judged by a panel of expert judges, and had to achieve pre set scores to qualify for selection.
It was with great delight that the gymnasts, coaches and parents saw the British gymnastics squad list posted to include four routines from Weston. Matt Saunders will be competing in the junior male individuals and the mixed pairs with partner Butterfield. Williams will be competing in the age 12-14 male individuals, and the mixed pairs with Landen.
They will join a 32 strong squad for the trip to Sofia, Bulgaria, at the end of May. They will be competing against over 27 countries, including such giants of the gymnastic world, China, Romania and Russia.
Weston’s top coach Debbie Saunders has also been selected to attend the event as a coach, and said: “This is the result of a four year training plan that had been implemented by the club, and a real credit to the gymnasts and all the coaching team.”
The gymnasts will be competing at the French Open in two weeks to use it as preparation for the world championships.
