Avon Ski Club member George Case finished second at the British Championships in Meribel, France.
AVON Ski Club, based at the artificial slope in Churchill, had three members competing this year at the British Championships in Meribel, France, for the winter season’s Ballon D’or for the ski racing fraternity.
George Case, one of the most promising trainees at the club, came back with two second place finishes in the mini slalom and giant slalom, being bettered on both occasions by a Scottish racer.
In a field of 90 mini racers (under-12), George laid down two stunning runs and this followed on from his success at the English Championships at half-term.
The first race was held over three timed runs with the best time counting. The second and longer race was held over two runs, with George actually faster on one run, but just not enough to clinch first place.
Max Schubert, also from Avon Ski Club, had two great runs in the under-10s to finish sixth and eighth in the two runs, and Darcie Coates came a respectable 25th in the children’s 1 (under-14) slalom and 31st in the giant slalom, in her first winter of racing on snow, being at the younger end of the age group.
George, Max and Darcie’s coach from Avon said that the results were all the more impressive as the majority of their race training has been on the artificial slope.
All three Avon members have benefited from a lot of time on snow this winter, and are now hoping to carry this forward to the summer season of racing which starts on May 5 at the Gloucester slope, when Avon will be hoping to better their third place result from last year.
The club is open to anyone interested in learning to race, especially children, and can be contacted via Fraser Black on 01934 427534. Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-7.30pm.
