Burnham & Berrow Golf Club steward Jack Palmer and barman Simon Lord, visited the 19th hole twice.

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club steward and three handicap golfer Jack Palmer, playing with club barman Simon Lord, who is a member at Wells and also plays off three made two visits to the 19th hole.

The first occasion was in beating opponents Phil Reynolds and Alex Godley from Clevedon in their third round match of the prestigious West of England Winter Foursomes after finishing all square after 18 holes, before returning to work at the other 19th hole.

Two-time winner Andy Limage also had a close match, winning at the last hole. Andy who won the tournament in 1990 and 1996 with Nick Cocking, who has since moved to Denmark, now plays with fellow Burnham & Berrow member and ex-club chairman Tony Mason.

They progress to play the pairing of Rob and Ben Stephens from Minchinhampton, who knocked out the 1995 champions Kevin Ramshaw from Thornbury and Richard Hine from Burnham & Berrow.

Local interest is maintained in the top half of the draw with 2007 winners Brean Golf Club professional and director of golf, David Haines and his brother Stephen, who is a member at Burnham & Berrow, who progress to the quarter-finals to play Yogenara Patel and Martin Aylett from Surrey, after beating the Burnham pairing of Robin Griffiths and Neil Folland.

After the recent storms, competitors enjoyed calmer conditions in the latest Stableford competition. Despite the more favourable weather conditions, scoring still proved difficult with some tricky pin positions set by the greenstaff to test the players.

Jon Marshfield won Division 2, returning the best score of the day with 38 points, helped with a two on the long par three 17th hole. Matthew Houghton playing off a four handicap, played some of the steadiest golf of the day putting together a gross score of 74 to win Division 1 with 37 points to just edge out Gareth Rees and Gordon Mackay, who both scored 36 points.

Results - Division 1: M Houghton 37 pts; G Rees 36; G Mackay 36; D Harries 35; G Clifford 35. Division 2: J Marshfield 38; J Edwards 36; B Gunning 36; P Yensen 33.
