Wedmore-based driver Ryan Cullen makes his debut in the elite Porsche SuperCup this weekend in Barcelona.

The 25-year-old former Bridgwater College student lines up among the top racers in the series fresh from winning the Porsche GT3 Middle East Cup.

The series brings together the top Porsche drivers from around the world to compete as part of the Formula One weekend in the Catalonian countryside.

Ryan, who will be driving for Christoff Huber’s Race Union team, said: “I’ve tested at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya a few weeks ago in the new car and I was lapping a second faster than previously.

“It is a super quick car and I can’t wait to test myself against the elite of the Porsche drivers. Barcelona is a great circuit and being in support of the Formula One guys adds a little extra spice to the weekend.”

Ryan’s first outing in the Porsche German Cup ended in a high-impact crash in the penultimate lap at the Nurburgring last weekend. Attempting to overtake, Ryan found himself travelling backwards at 110mph before crashing into a barrier.

He said: “It was a disappointing end to what had been a good start in the German Cup. I qualified in fourth place, but I knew I had it in me to take pole.

“The crash was unfortunate, but thanks to the guys at Clevedon gym Body Management and my sports masseur in Weston, I know I will be great shape for the challenge in Barcelona.”
