AVON Ski Club finished off the Race League in Gloucester, by setting a new record for the whole team being under 15.

Avon took one under-9, six under-12 and three under-15s as well as taking three under-9s and an under-12 and under-15 for the joint Avon/Exeter team (with adult Andrea in the under-50s).

Due to the way points are awarded, this made for a difficult morning in the timed runs for Avon. Callum Black came third in the under-9s, Christian Plaster sixth in the under-15s and Oliver Mathew eighth in the under-12s.

The junior age groups are a lot larger than the adult age groups, with 91 of the 134 racers in three groups. Callum and Oliver will be looking for better results next season as they will remain in these same age groups for another year.

The afternoon head-to-head racing, which is groups of four from the morning with the closest times, so you could get a eight-year-old racing a 50-year-old and often do, saw some exhilarating racing and some close calls.

Oliver Mathew and Alex Sayers won all three of their races, Amelie Platts Smith (6) won two out of three, as did Lewis Williams, Jon Sayers, Paige Thomas, Christian Plaster and Aimee Thomas-Jeffries.

Due to the head-to-heads being decided on times from the mornings, you can often get team-mates racing each other and for the second time this season, the club had the two Sayers brothers racing head-to-head, this time the win went to Alex.

Thanks go to Gloucester Ski Slope for organising the league, to Avon Ski and Action for enabling the club to run race training on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, and to all the helpers on the day, especially Malcolm Plaster and Fraser Black.

Also thanks go most importantly to all the team members for all their hard work and dedication to make the club the fastest growing club in the South West.

The club would also like to thank their sponsors, RM Signs and Printers for the gazebo and flags, Stephen Jabs Painters for the new service bench and Leki and Rossignol for equipment, without their help the club would not be able to train as many children as they do.
