The annual North Somerset ladies’ doubles tournament went ahead despite a continual threat of rain.

Despite a continual threat of rain, the North Somerset ladies did not let the weather dampen their spirits for the league’s annual tournament which went ahead as planned in a good-natured spirit.

Although four teams regrettably pulled out at the last minute due to illness, injury and family problems, the remaining 10 couples put in a fine performance.

In a thrilling semi-final, Sarah Waring and Jenny Bird, from Cleeve, just scraped through to beat last year’s winner, Cheddar’s Juliet Knight, and her partner Claire Blythe, in a closely fought tie-break ending at 10-8.

In fact for Sarah and Jenny, this was their second tournament as runners-up.

The other semi-final was an all-Bridgwater affair, with Carole Beach and Sue Williamson beating their compatriots Anne Bazley and Jean Russell, before going on to a convincing 6-2 win in the final to gain the shield for a third time.

As usual a high standard of play and camaraderie was evident throughout, leading to yet another successful tournament.
