Hornets Colts reached the county cup final with victory over Walcot from Bath.

HORNETS Colts reached the Somerset County Cup final when they beat highly-fancied Walcot of Bath 29-17 at the Nest.

With many county players and an England international in their ranks, Walcot were always going to be tough opponents for Hornets and proved their quality in the opening 10 minutes when they took the lead with an unconverted try.

Hornets began to get the measure of the large Walcot pack and after several attempts at the Walcot line from close range, captain Louis Symiakos forced his way over for a try.

Hornets took the lead when Charlie Carter picked up a pass off his bootlaces to finish off a superb team try. Conor Littlewood converted from the touch line to put Hornets 12-5 in front at the break.

After the turnaround, fly-half Craig Nicholls burst through a gap before dummying the full-back to touch down at the posts, giving Littlewood an easy conversion and stretching Hornets lead out to 19-5.

Back came Walcot with another unconverted try, but Hornets regrouped and hit back with two cracking long-range tries. Firstly winger Arthur Rousell’s pace took him outside his opposite number to score in the corner.

Next, centre Sam Balkham scorched through the midfield and raced 60 metres to the line to score a wonderful solo effort. Walcot’s impressive centre helped himself to a late try to complete the scoring at 29-17 to Hornets.

This was a great effort from the Hornets who were missing a few players. Back row Joe Smith just pipped Conor Littlewood to the Weston Fastners man of the match award.

Hornets will now face Wellington in the final at Taunton on April 28.
