Winscombe Under-18s won their final match of junior rugby against local rivals Hornets.
WINSCOMBE Under-18s faced old rivals Hornets in their final game of junior rugby and recorded a fine 21-0 victory.
Most of the group of players have played through the mini and junior age groups from Under-7s and up.
Both sides started brightly and approached the game in good spirit, attempting to spread the ball in less than ideal conditions. Winscombe scored twice from short range in the first-half with tries from Aled Corcoran and hooker Harry Paul.
Despite many line breaks, Hornets were unable to break through the home defence and it was Winscombe who scored the final try of the season with the move of the match.
Forwards and backs linked well to send Calum Stewart over the line. Fly-half Jim Merryfield’s third conversion topped off a perfect kicking display.
DUE to heavy rain and high winds, Hornets Under-10s only had two games during their three-day Cornish tour.
In the first game, Hayle took an early lead. For the next 10 minutes, Hornets were kept just in front of their own try line with strong tackles by Keelan Hodges-Swales, Tim Morris, Tom Reed and Reef Morton.
However, Hayle eventually broke through to extend their lead. From the re-start Hornets took the game deep into Hayle’s half, but the hosts broke out and ran in their third try just before half-time.
In the second half, Reeve Bailey and Keelan made excellent tackles. Tim, Lloyd Chudley, Tom and Reef won several mauls and Sam Hughes and Ethan Hunt had some good runs, but Hornets were unable to break through and Hayle won 5-0.
Hornets faced a different Hayle side in the second game and the hosts started well and were kept out by a -aving tackle by Reeve.
Strong drives by Tom and Reef supported by Tim, Lloyd and Keelan kept the game in the Hayle half. Having gone close with efforts from Sol Midgley and Lloyd, it was third time lucky when Reef went over. Hornets extended their lead just before half-time when Reeve broke through the Hayle line.
Hornets had a great start to the second half with Tom and Reef both scoring. The icing was then put on the cake when Keelan broke from the halfway line to score against his old club, giving Hornets a 5-0 win
The Under-11s embarked on their annual tour, this year’s location was Perranporth and Hornets played Hayle and fellow tourists Brixham.
In the first game against Brixham, Hornets came out all guns blazing scoring three tries in the first half through Oscar Browne, Charlie Fairhurst and Luke Collins, with Ayden Chenoweth kicking all three conversions.
The second half was equally as good with the forwards dominating, producing good ball for the backs to score another three tries through Chenoweth and Fairhurst (2). All three were converted by Charlie to give a final score of 42-0.
After a five minute break, Hornets were up against the hosts and were caught napping in the first minute and conceded a try, which seemed to kick start a fantastic team performance.
Hornets started the second half by scoring the equalising try with a great finish by winger Conner Hill. As the game continued, Hornets constantly attacked but the game ended in a 7-7 draw.
Squad: Ayden Chenoweth, Bradley Lucas, Charlie Fairhurst, Connor Hill, Eddie Williams, Ethan Loveridge, Joe Frost, Luke Collins, Lois Bird, Mitch Hawkes, Nathan Langdon, Oscar Browne, Owen Brake, Sebastian Wood, Tom Cattermole and Thomas Howling.
