Hornets Colts reach county semi-finals

Hornets Colts topped their group to reach the semi-finals of the Gloucestershire Cup.

Hornets Colts welcomed Painswick to The Nest in the latest league encounter and a win saw them into the semi-finals of the Gloucestershire Cup.

Hornets did not have it all their own way, as Painswick struck first, but after a multi-phase play where all the forwards had their turn at making ground, the backs spread the ball wide for Hitchens to touch down.

Brooks’ line-out was working well and Miell was in control and, with a well-rehearsed move, Blake Williams shipped the ball to Solomon at 10 to release Constable, who set Middleton free to score.

Hornets were dominating all set pieces and Painswick’s scrum was under huge pressure by Haswell and Hancock. Blake Williams forced his opposite number into a mistake and quick hands saw Holyday go over.

Painswick replied with another try before Hornets forced another mistake in the scrum due to huge pressure and two slick passes later and Constable surged over.

After the break, Swaby bashed his way through to get on the front foot. Holyday found Francis on a perfect line and the centre went over untouched, and then converted his own try.

The visitors scored again, but Hornets’ control was too much as they marched upfield for a try by Middleton and a second for Constable as Hornets ran out 37-19 winners.

Hornets now go through as champions because the last game due at Weston has been conceded because Weston cannot raise a side, and so a home semi-final awaits.
