Weston Rugby Club returned from Belgium as tournament winners.

A TEAM from Weston Rugby Club returned from Dendermonde in Belgium victorious after winning the Beer Cup final.

First up were the Moore Stephens Lions from Belgium and a good all-round performance saw Weston open their account with a 40-5 win.

Next was Orlowo Terror from Poland, who had already managed to lose five players to injury. In sporting fashion, Weston lent them a number of players to fulfil the fixture, but Weston were eventual winners 20-5.

The final game of the day and the decider was against French team Roubaix. Weston ran out 15-10 winners and progressed to the knockout stages.

The following day saw Weston take on Sivvy’s Stags and they ran out comfortable 45-0 winners, running in seven tries in 10 minutes.

Next up were Falents, a physical and talented group of Irishmen. In a bruising encounter, Weston won 15-5 to reach the semi-finals. The Seasiders reached the final after winning 5-0 in their toughest match of the tournament.

They faced a strong French team, Pays de Meaux, in front of a packed crowd of about 4,000. Superb ball retention and skill prevailed in what was an entertaining final, as Weston ran out 25-10 victors.

Thanks go to main sponsor The Loft and others, including IEWC, Thatchers, Freak Events and Reko, for all their generous donations. Special mention for Tom Wheatley, who collected the men’s player of the tournament award.
