Somerset’s Olympic hopeful, Liam Phillips, is on his way to Rio ahead of the men’s individual BMX event.

The 27-year-old tweeted earlier today (Thursday) ‘next stop Rio.’

Phillips, who went to King Alfred School in Highbridge and grew up in Burnham-on-Sea, will be hoping to ride to glory after a hugely successful year.

In April, he claimed his fourth consecutive victory at the BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester and back in 2015 he became the first man to claim back-to-back BMX World Cup titles.

Phillips will compete in the men’s individual BMX event which is set to start on August 18.

He is the only male rider from Team GB who qualified for the Olympics.

In London 2012, Phillips got all the way to the final but just missed out on a medal. It was an even more remarkable finish as he had surgery on his collarbone just ten weeks before the games.
