A successful karate tournament was held at Hutton Moor Sports Centre, with more than 160 medals up for grabs.

Bristol Karate Centre successfully held a national and regional karate tournament at Hutton Moor Sports Centre.

In the first Wales and West friendly, 75 competitors competed from 11 Shotokan dojos across the country, including Weston, Yatton, Mendips, Taunton, Bristol, Kingswood, University of Bath, Tewksbury, Newport, London and Burnley.

More than 160 medals were up for grabs over a full day of set forms (kata) and partner sparring (kumite).

Stephanie Jones said: “What an amazing competition today. All the referees and judges were so good with the children. It was my son’s first competition and it has filled him with so much confidence. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable day.”

Event organiser Michael Harris, 3rd dan black belt from Bristol Karate Centre, said: “This was a great national and regional event to again put Weston on the sporting map and showcase local talent. With karate confirmed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the sky’s the limit.”
