Writing as a frequent user of Backwell Pool over several years, it is encouraging to know that councillors Peter Burden and Felicity Baker are arguing in favour of retaining Backwell Pool regardless of what happens in Nailsea (North Somerset Times April 5).It appears the interest groups in Nailsea are doing their best to find fault with Backwell Pool, in the belief that they will achieve their aim if the pool can be shown to be in poor condition or too old, neither of which is true.Backwell Pool was built less than 40 years ago. If some consider this to be old, does this mean there would be demands for any pool built in Nailsea to be rebuilt every 20 or so years, to avoid there being an 'old' pool in the town?In the event of Backwell Pool being closed and demolished in favour of a new pool in Nailsea, this would be a waste of material, money and (in these days of global warming) a considerable amount of energy. Why should Backwell swimmers have to go to Nailsea or elsewhere when we have a perfectly satisfactory pool here, now. I think that with a modest amount of maintenance, Backwell pool can continue to serve for many years into the future, and there is no justification for its closure.Norman Lott - West Town Road, Backwell
