A prolific baker who walked the 10-mile Mendip Challenge at the age of 79 has died, aged 86.

Betty Pleasant was born in Banwell in 1930 and married George Pleasant, who she met on the promenade in Weston-super-Mare.

Betty worked at Hales Cakes’ factory in Clevedon, where her nickname became ‘Bionic Bet’ for her speedy work.

Betty and George had five children together.

George died in 1997, aged 73, and Betty moved to Knightstone House sheltered housing in Weston in 2006.

She walked the Mendip Challenge for Weston Hospicecare several times, the last time being in 2009 when she was aged 79.

At Knightstone House, she was known as Betty The Cake as she served up so many treats for her fellow residents. She was also a member of the Mothers’ Union and a keen church-goer.

She donated her body to medical research.

Her memorial service will take place at St Mary’s Lydiard Tregoze, Swindon, on February 8 at 12.30pm.
