World War Two veteran dies aged 98

A WESTON confectioner who served during the Burma War has died aged 98.

Sidney Rattle was born in Kingston Seymour as the youngest of six siblings.

He grew up in Wick St Lawrence, helping the farmers with the hay-making, and also pumping the church organ.

He moved to Weston, where he became a confectioner at Henry Bakers, Perrets and John’s.

Sidney was in the Home Guard during World War Two before joining the Burma campaign, where he was based for four 

At one point, the officers were cut off from any communication, and wondered whether they would ever return home.

But he did return home, and married Marjory, who had been evacuated to Weston from London in 1940. They had two daughters, called Marilyn and Gail.

Just last week, he was interviewed by Wendy Aldiss who is taking photographs of Burma veterans to feature in an exhibition called The Forgotten Army.
