A host of the biggest names
in British comedy will be appearing in Bristol this month for the 14th annual Slapstick festival.

The annual event revisits the era of silent and classic silver screen comedy, and injects fresh life into this warmly-remembered material by linking it to dozens of modern big-name comedy performers.

Lee Mack, Barry Cryer, Jo Brand, Tim Vine, Lucy Porter, Ade Edmondson and Christopher Biggins are just some of the contemporary stars who will be hosting events across the festival’s four days.

Altogether, some 25 events will take place across the city from January 25-28.

Highlights will include:

n Tim Vine hosting a triple bill of silent comedy classics starring Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy.

n Jo Brand sharing clips and memories of her favourite comedy moments.

n Ade Edmondson and Nigel Planer re-uniting to look back at their work on such 1980s TV hits as Comic Strip Presents.

n Christopher Biggins giving an ‘I was in it’ introduction to a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

n Bill Oddie re-opening The Goodies’ songbook and looking back to when songs like Funky Gibbon earned the comedy trio chart success.

n Lucy Porter paying tribute to two of the silent era’s best-loved women comedians, as part of a strand which also takes in ‘lost clowns’ from Europe.

n Barry Cryer remembering The Two Ronnies, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett.

n Lee Mack saluting Laurel & Hardy in a show featuring anecdotes, clips, and a full screening of the long-thought-lost Battle Of The Century.

Festival director Chris Daniels said: “January can be a gloomy month but the next Slapstick festival offers such a wide variety of laugh-out-loud treats that we’re sure this programme will brighten the mood of every comedy fan.

“We’re especially happy to welcome such top class entertainers as Jo Brand, Lee Mack, Ade Edmondson, and Christopher Biggins to Slapstick for the first time and equally
glad so many audience favourites from previous festivals will return.”
