JOHN Maclean’s Slow West follows the trials and tribulations of a wide-eyed Scottish fellow searching for his love in the American west during the mid-1800s.
Nearly everyone in the area is a new arrival. Silas (Michael Fassbender), a charismatic bodyguard is chief among the immigrants, and soon crosses paths with Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and offers to help him survive in his cross-country quest; but only for a price.
The offer is well-timed, coming just as Jay witnesses his first act of violence, and can’t afford to turn Silas down.
And time is certainly of the essence – unbeknown to him, there is already a bounty on the head of Rose, his female companion (Caren Pistorius), as well as her father (Rory McCann).
In this charming film, the mismatched travellers navigate their way through a number of encounters while Jay’s memories around the campfire hark back to his Scottish days, and what difficulties could occur if he does find Rose.
