Hollywood star Tom Cruise may be feeling a bit sorry for himself at the moment after breaking his ankle when a stunt went wrong last week.

But thankfully for Tom, he can kick back, relax and enjoy the release of his new film American Made – which hit cinemas on Friday.

The Mission Impossible frontman stars as Barry Seal, a hustler and globe-trotting pilot with a lavish lifestyle and expensive tastes.

But the playboy is transformed into a secret agent when the CIA recruits him to orchestrate one of the biggest covert operations in United States history.

Appearing alongside Cruise are the likes of Star Wars actor Domhnall Gleeson, X-Men’s Caleb Landry Jones, and Breaking Bad star Jesse Plemons.

The film is based on the true story of Seal, who worked as a pilot for the now-defunct Trans World Airlines.

In the 1980s he became a drug smuggler but when his scheme was foiled by the Drug Enforcement Agency he was recruited by the secret service to help quash the growing drugs trade and threat of communism in Central America.

But Seal gets mixed up with the infamous Medellín cartel, which was fronted by Pablo Escobar – the leader of one of the biggest organised crime schemes in history.

Escobar’s exploits have been recreated in critically-acclaimed Netflix original Narcos, and fans of the show are sure to enjoy American Made.
