Sure, game nights with your mates are a good laugh – but have you ever longed for more heart-racing excitement than snakes and ladders can offer?

That is the premise of new action comedy Game Night, which boasts an all-star cast – including Arrested Development’s Jason Bateman and The Notebook star Rachel McAdams – and promises a fast-paced film packed with laughs.

An ultra-competitive group of friends love nothing more than gathering around the Monopoly board on a weekly basis, battling to be the best with dice in hand.

But after years of the same old games, Max (Bateman) and Annie’s (McAdams) parties have grown stale, and his brother Brooks, played by Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler, decides to raise the stakes by arranging a murder mystery party.

Brooks enlists the help of fake thugs and federal agents to immerse his pals in the game, and when he is kidnapped the group are tasked with unravelling the mystery.

But as they commence their mission, the would-be detectives realise the game is not what it seems – finding themselves in way over their head investigating an actual crime.

Game Night has won favour among critics, with review bible Rotten Tomatoes giving a favourable rating of 82 out of 100.

Its summary of the film reads: “With a talented cast turned loose on a loaded premise – and a sharp script loaded with dark comedy and unexpected twists – Game Night might be more fun than the real thing.”
