Live theatre is a marvellous medicine

AN OPEN-AIR theatre performance which is suitable for all the family is coming to Weston and will bring a popular children’s tale to life.

George's Marvellous MedicineGeorge's Marvellous Medicine

Roald Dahl’s classic story of mischief and shenanigans, George’s Marvellous Medicine, is being played out by award-winning al fresco theatre company Illyria thanks to the efforts of Weston’s own Backyard Theatre Company.

The touring company is taking the adapted screenplay to the Old Town Quarry in South Road for a performance full of colourful costumes, live music and vibrant characters.

The wicked tale tells the story of young George, who has a horrible and bossy grandmother.

After being ordered around by the old lady, George decides to switch her medicine with his very own concoction to make her nicer – and gets hysterical results.

Illyria have recently completed a record-breaking sell-out season of The Twits and this latest offering promises to be just as delightful and deliciously disobedient.

There is plenty of audience interaction to keep children aged five and older, as well as the big kids in the crowd, entertained.

The family live show is taking place on July 5, with gates opening at 5pm and the show starting at 6.30pm.

Tickets, priced £6.50 for children, £13.50 for adults or £32.50 for a family ticket, are available from or by emailing

The Mercury has teamed up with The Backyard Theatre Company to offer three lucky readers the chance to win a family ticket to the show. Family tickets include entry for two adults and two children.
