An extraordinary Japanese dance group which uses martial arts-led routines to tell compelling stories will showcase their skills on a Weston-super-Mare stage later this month.

Contact Gonzo will perform at Theatre Tropicana, in Marine Parade, on May 19 at 7.30pm and May 20 at 3pm.

The group were based in Osaka and were founded more than a decade ago in 2006.

The dancers made their name on YouTube using martial arts and violence as a medium of dance, growing a large following which has seen them perform across the globe.

Show producers MAYK Theatre promise to feature talented local performers alongside Contact Gonzo, offering Weston’s upcoming dancers the chance to work with an internationally-renowned troop.

A show spokesman said it promises to be an incredible show for Weston.

The spokesman added: “Imagine a kind of dance that’s also a martial art, that’s also a bit like a game that reminds you of something you’ve seen on the internet, or in a slapstick film, or on the streets.

“Contact Gonzo’s unique, playful, jaw-dropping physical style is violent and tender, and very funny yet very serious.”

The group are touring the country thanks to funding from Arts Council England’s strategic touring fund – with a range of burgeoning acts to set to follow at the Tropicana.

Tickets for this show, priced £10, are available from the Tropicana’s Bay Café or online via www.thetheatreorchard.org.uk
