On Saturday the club will be manning a special event station on Brean Down to celebrate International Marconi Day and because of the location’s significance it is hoped that many stations throughout the world will be contacted.

A representative from SSAFA Forces Help is also available for advice and guidance in the club on a Wednesday between 10am and noon.

WESTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Members had a fascinating evening with Roy Cheek, a retired lecturer, who gave a talk on ‘Irresistible plants to butterflies’.

He showed maps where the various species of butterflies were located and then supplied us with lists of the best plants to grow to encourage butterflies. We should all now have gardens full of butterflies.

The next meeting will be on May 8 at St Peter’s Church Hall, Baytree Road, at 7.30pm.

The speaker will be well known Chris Sperring of The Hawk and Owl Trust who will be giving a talk on birdsong and hopefully bringing one of his owls along. Chris broadcasts regularly on Radio 4 and also appears on TV.

For those wishing to take up the various outings check the closing dates so you don’t miss out.

Anyone looking for a short break, husband and non-members welcome, would have a really lovely time at the WI’s Denman House in Oxfordshire. There are lots of courses available, how about learning a new skill or brushing up an old one?

The walk starting at 10am on May 7 will be in Clevedon. Part of the walk will be along Clevedon Pier. Don’t forget to bring along your pennies for Hewish WI contribution towards the ACWW’s - Woman Walk the World.

Our speaker for this month was Becky Cawsey talking about her experiences while working for the police in Bristol.

She put a lot of humour into her talk but at the same time, managed to put over how seriously she took her role in the 35 years working with the Police.

At the May 15 meeting we are to bring along a favourite pudding to share. We meet on the third Thursday of every month in the Hewish Village Hall. Visitors will be made very welcome.

WESTON BRASS: The concert programme has been chosen, and the rehearsals for the concert in Middlezoy Church on May 10 have gone very well, but Conductor Tony Osborne is still keeping one or two surprises up his sleeve.

These surprises seem to revolve around Bb Bassist Mark Mills solo, which will come as no surprise to those who know Mark.

Our own resident arranger John Bryant has also promised not to be out done by Mark Mills, as he is scheduled to play the Mozart Horn Concerto. There is a feeling in the band that there could be even more surprises in store from John, and that this could well be an evening to remember.

Closer to home will be a concert in Banwell Church on June 14 at 7.30pm, this will be a brand new programme, one that should appeal to all.

For more information on both the training and main band visit www.westonbrass.com and to book the band please contact Gill on 01934 824461.
