n MARK FRIENDSHIP CLUB: Attendance was low, and apologies for absence were high at the meeting on August 16. On reflection, the decision to meet in August instead of January was perhaps a mistake, as traditionally it is a holiday period.

However, it didn’t affect the quality of the meeting as the chairman welcomed everyone.

The usual business went ahead until it was time for the auction, but with the absence of the regular auctioneers, it was Jan Smith, a willing volunteer, who filled the gap. She was thanked by the chairman who then introduced Becky Fry, from Somerset Insight, an organisation based in Taunton helping visually impaired people in all parts of the county.

Becky was accompanied by Martin, a disabled friend, and his guide dog, Harry. Martin also spoke about his disability, and afterwards a collection was made for which they were very grateful.

At our next meeting on September 6, we welcome Jean Routley, and her subject will be ‘Why collect postcards?’
