RAF ASSOCIATION (RAFA) WESTON BRANCH: Our Battle of Britain commemoration celebrations started with a formal dinner on Friday, a street collection on Saturday and a remembrance service at St John’s Parish Church on Sunday morning last week followed by an open day where we welcomed guests and visitors.

Many thanks to all those who contributed towards our Wings Appeal.

Dates for your diary include a fish and chip supper on Saturday, a quiz night on September 29 and a steak night on October 6.

The association is the largest single service membership organisation of current and past members of the RAF, their families, friends and those who wish to support the aims of the association.

It helps serving and ex-members of the RAF and their dependants who are in need of support or welfare.

RAFA CONCERT BAND - (BLAKEHAY RESIDENT BAND): The band travelled to Abbey Wood for the annual lunch time concert.

Our second Film Oscars music concert in the Blakehay is on October 6, with special guests the Waves of Harmony Ladies Choir - tickets on sale now.

The band helps to raise the profile and funds for the RAF Association and other service and civilian charities around the Midlands, Wales and the South West, through concerts and music support for events being held.

PROBUS MILTON: The club meets on the second and fourth Thursday each month.

David Morgan was in sparkling form as he ran through an inspiring and wide ranging selection of slides from around the UK and other parts of the world. The subject ‘Water and the world we inhabit and how we use it’.

WESTON MUSIC APPRECIATION SOCIETY: The new season gets underway on Wednesday when the speaker will be Jude Forth whose talk is entitled ‘I do sing because I must’.

The meeting is held at St Jude’s Hall, St Peter’s Church, Baytree Road, starting at 7.30pm.

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF WRINGTON VALE: President Jacky inducted two new members.

She reported that the coffee morning held in August raised �130, this will enable the club to continue supporting a child’s schooling overseas.

Final arrangements were made for the ploughman’s lunch today (Thurs) at St James’ Hall, Winscombe, proceeds of which will go to Weston Young Carers. It was decided to hold a hot liquid lunch at the same venue on October 26 for Aquafilter/Safewater Trust.

Members were requested to collect items to fill shoe boxes for children overseas.

The speaker for the evening was Brian Aston who gave a fascinating talk on the history of the ss Great Britain.

WESTON CHESS CLUB: Members will hold the annual lightning tournament this evening (Thurs) at the Victoria Bowling Club, Albert Quadrant.

The first round will start at 7.30pm.

With only 10 seconds allowed for thought between moves the games are fast and furious.

Mistakes made are often overlooked which is all part of the fun.

Anyone with an interest in the game is invited along to meet us and join in.

WESTON HOMEMAKERS: The September meeting was a talk and slide show about Thatcher’s Cider and how it started and became one of the leading cider companies in the country.

We were given samples of different types of cider which use different types of apples to obtain the perfect taste.

A very interesting talk.

Our notices were given along with details of future trips and the club holiday.

Our next meeting is on October 2 at Weston Social Club, Devonshire Road.

WRINGTON FRIENDSHIP CLUB: We are looking forward to our Christmas lunch and our Christmas party. Details of the venue for this year’s event will be available soon.

Members will be happy to know that music consisting of carols and old time tunes has been organised.

Lots of us will have enjoyed a short period of gentle exercises organised by Wendy and the wonderful ladies of Agexercise.

A welcome awaits any reader in the 50 and over age range.

We meet approximately twice a month on Friday afternoons in the Memorial Hall.

WESTON PHILATELIC SOCIETY: The club’s first meeting of the new season is to take place on Tuesday, the subjects will be a 10 sheet display by members with US or T headings.

The society’s meetings take place in the Conservative Club, 24/26 Alexandra Parade, on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6.45 for 7.15pm Anyone who is interested in collecting postage stamps or other items of postal history will be made very welcome and will find our members very friendly and only too happy to share their knowledge and interests.

The society would like to thank the members and the committee of the Conservative Club for their kindness and support over the last year.

THE EATING BETTER, PAYING LESS, COOKING CLUB: While the core of what we do is focussed on discovering a variety of ways to prepare and enjoy healthier vegetarian meals we do also take time to enjoy a day out and picnic in the sunshine, or take a stroll along the wharf, ice-cream in hand.

Recent outings included a trip to yesteryear courtesy of the steam train to Watchet and a journey back to the 16th Century and meeting with Long Will at Glastonbury Abbey. Meeting fortnightly in the Seventh-day Adventist Church Hall, Locking Road, BS22 8QY, this veggie cooking club enjoys recipe demonstrations and tastings in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Laughter and good humour along with tasty samples may be enjoyed on October 4 and 18; November 1, 15 and 29 and a seasonal special on December 13.

BLEADON PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUP: Members start their new autumn season on Tuesday at the Coronation Hall, Bleadon.

They had a busy time running an exhibition at Weston Museum –‘Life in our town’ during August and September.

The group is having a welcome back evening with an in-house print session with the theme of ‘Wrecked’ as the subject.

LOCKING GREEN WI: Our president welcomed members after the summer break.

Names were taken for the next Roman Way Group meeting to be held on October 25 at Hewish Village Hall.

A ballot was taken for the tickets to the Avon Federation annual meeting at the Winter Gardens, on Tuesday, as this event was over subscribed.

The speaker will be Adam Henson from Countryfile.

At very short notice, our speaker for this month was Dave Wallace with a brilliant talk on the helicopter museum.

Dave explained how the museum first began, where some of the international helicopters have come from and also about the work of the volunteers who help to restore the aircraft.

The next meeting will be our annual meeting and social evening on October 9.

WORLEWIND BAND: Despite the recent strikes by workers at French ferry ports, members of WorleWind Band joined forces with Spectrum Music (based in Devon) to take Brittany by storm.

The September sunshine shone and the band played, entertaining crowds in three different locations across Brittany.

Concarneau is such a beautiful town that we could not resist an hour of impromptu busking in the town square in the late afternoon sunshine - from the reception it received we are in no doubt that visitors and locals to the town were pleased we had.

Three members of the band won awards over the weekend for their talent and contribution to the success and enjoyment of the tour.

The band’s next local concert is at St Mark’s Church on September 29 at 7.30pm.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMEN’S SECTION WESTON BRANCH: The charity table top sale was a successful event and the next coffee morning is on October 5 at 10.30am to noon in the small room at the United Reformed Church Hall.

There will be tea/coffee and biscuits, a tombola and raffle and admission is free of charge.

The next meeting is on October 10 at 2.15pm and the annual meeting will be held on October 24 at 2.15pm in the above venue.

The annual subscriptions of �8 are due from October 1 and should be paid by December 31 if you wish to remain a member.

Our annual church service is on October 28 at 10.30am in the United Reformed Church.

THE NOTABLE CLUB: Members enjoyed lunch in the sunshine on the garden patio at the Ebdon Arms, Wick St Lawrence.

Members welcomed Tim Lewis with accompanied keyboard player for a talk ‘Glorious mud’.

This was an entertaining presentation of the lives and lyrics of Flanders and Swan.

The annual barbecue at the hall was enjoyed by members with food in abundance.

Many thanks go to chef David for the cooking assisted by Norman and the team.

A trip on the Willow Trust boat Leonard Matchan, down the Sharpness Canal with a picnic on the bank was a highlight of the year and enjoyed by all.

WESTON LIBERAL DEMOCRATS: New Farming and Food Minister David Heath MP was in Weston on Friday to sample local food and drink and talk community safety with local Liberal Democrats.

The visit to Weston was Mr Heath’s first in his new ministerial post following his promotion in the recent Government reshuffle.

The Somerton and Frome MP was previously the Deputy Leader of the House of Commons.

Mr Heath was joined in his visit to Weston by Pete Levy, who is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the new post of directly elected police and crime commissioner for Avon and Somerset.
