The new road plans for Slade Road certainly are potty. This means that anyone who nips out in their car from Port Marine to the Waitrose Garage will, on their way home, have to come out of the garage, turn left, go past Argos, then turn left at Brewsters, and do a big loop back down Harbour Road. Madness. The fundamental problem, of course, is that you cannot turn right when you come out of the Waitrose Garage, and we all know the cause of that. According to a 'council spokesman' the proposed scheme will reduce the volume of traffic? How do they work that one out? Do cars turn into pumpkins as a result of the new changes? Any schemes that fiddle with the consequences of the main Cabstand problem are missing the point.Take out the traffic lights, put in a few roundabouts and zebra crossings, including some in Harbour Road so children walking to and from Portishead Primary school and the leisure centre can cross the road safely. It's really not difficult, a few pots of paint and a judicious use of a JCB over a weekend would fix it!I think George Bush is out of a job soon - even he would be an improvement on whoever is in charge of the 'Portishead Harebrained Traffic Schemes' department at the council.Paul Newport - Portishead
