WHAT must visitors to this year's Beach Race have thought of the attitude of the police who appeared to be totally focused on unlicensed and unroadworthy vehicles and their apparent policy of causing more traffic hold-ups rather than easing the congestion? They set up check points on major roundabouts and their 'tax dodger' cameras were the first welcoming sight motorists saw entering Weston. I am not condoning minor or major vehicle crime but it did appear over zealous and counter productive. Once in town some people were still not safe from victimisation. My 17-year-old son returned to his car and, after establishing that the vehicle was totally legal, a PC asked the lad 'does your mummy know you're out in her car'? This did not provide a response so the officer then chose to criticise my son's hairstyle. This does nothing for public relations and because I have brought my son up to respect the law he asked me: "Are the police allowed to take the mickey out of us?" My answer was no and that respect has to be earned. It is not always the youngsters who are at fault.NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
