I WAS interested to read in your paper that competitors and visitors to the Beach Race had been prevented from parking in the streets this year. In Severn Road we had two camper vans parked for three days, running electrical cables across the pavements into one holiday home, where about 30 people seemed to be staying, if the number of cars parked around the property was anything to go by. The police passed by and asked for the cables to be moved on health and safety grounds, but the minute they went the cables appeared again. We have many elderly and vulnerable people living in this area and it was a miracle nobody was hurt. On the Sunday we had a gentleman running a bike-washing facility from his camper van on the pavement, so we had the noise of his generator going all morning and a pavement awash with sand and water. If anyone wanted to walk on the pavement that was tough, unless they wanted to get drenched. Most residents in our area of Severn Road were delighted when these people left on Sunday afternoon. The Beach Race obviously generates a lot of income for some areas of Weston, and is enjoyed by many but the organisers need to make sure they enforce any regulations decided upon. For us and those living around us it was a nightmare weekend! Such a shame when it could generate great goodwill and enjoyment for all in Weston. GILL BANWELL - Via emailI COMMEND the parent and 17-year-old boy for speaking up regarding the pathetic comments of the police at the Beach Race (last week's heading 'Does nothing for public relations'). Unfortunately this attitude has become all too frequent. This is not only my view but also a large majority of people I come in contact with. Also, it is not age-related and covers young and old alike. One particular member of the police force, who regularly patrols the town centre, is very sarcastic and condescending. This attitude only alienates people against the police, who constantly ask for co-operation from us.A S DAVIS - Victoria Quadrant, Weston
