IT IS Tuesday 1 May 2007. There are some elections happening this week. I know this because I have been sent my polling card by the local person responsible and a few weeks ago the Mercury published a list of candidates. This is the only way I know about the forthcoming election. No prospective councillor has been in contact with me. I have seen no literature regarding what the councillors are standing for and I do not even know for whom I am allowed to vote! And then the councillors and politicians have the cheek to complain about voter apathy! Therefore I shall not vote on Thursday. Why? Because I have no idea who the names on the ballot paper represent, and if they cannot be bothered to tell me who they are and why I should vote for them why should I bother voting? I suspect most councillors will retain the seats, and their expense accounts, by default, but with very few people voting for them. It will be interesting to learn just how many of Weston's population actually vote. None of the councillors can, in my opinion, say they represent populace unless they have at least 50 per cent of the vote. Otherwise they simply represent the minority who voted!DAVID McVITTIE - Royal Sands, Weston
