I THOUGHT residents who have complained about the appearance of the Silica/Carrot might be interested in seeing this photograph of a piece of modern art I saw in Quebec City a couple of weeks ago. This attracted, and indeed still attracts, similar controversy. It was given by the people of Paris to Quebec City to mark the anniversary of the city's foundation. It is supposed to represent a man in dialogue with a bronze bust of Louis XIV situated further up the street. The strip of glass on the pavement, which is illuminated at night, represents the path of life. The piece is situated in the heart of the Old Port, an area of old gabled buildings set in narrow cobbled streets and so, in my opinion, jars somewhat with its surroundings. But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say and if public art is supposed to stimulate discussion, then it certainly works. And, if you don't like the Silica, just think, it could have been worse!SHARON POOLEShrubbery Road, Weston
