MERCURY reporters are confused. The low wall and railings around Knightstone Island are for public protection and do not feature in the flood defence scheme. The sea front wall is however this town's only line of protection from inundation. As a committed conservationist with a proven track record over many years in this town I do not lightly support changes to our promenade. However when faced with irrefutable scientific evidence of sea level change it behoves all of us in positions of influence to act for the common good. I am not interested in short-term political opportunism, but I am very concerned about the well being of 4,500 properties at serious risk of flooding. There's more to this than your seafront hotelier friends.JOHN CROCKFORD-HAWLEYVia e-mail
