Being very much involved with local theatre, mainly as chairman of Backwell Playhouse, I was interested in last week's letter from Victoria Morris who - commenting on Leslie Day's proposals for the Glassworks site - mentioned that there is no theatre with raised seats in the area. This is, of course, incorrect. Backwell Playhouse is a local purpose-built theatre with raked seating, affording excellent views of the stage from all parts of the auditorium. A welcoming foyer adds to its charms. We put on a range of productions, professional and amateur and all are welcome to attend. Local amateur groups can hire the theatre when our in-house company is not performing. The Playhouse is fortunate in being wholly owned by our charitable trust, and having a number of volunteers who undertake the work free of charge. The economics of building and running the proposed new theatre will no doubt be given careful consideration by Nailsea council. John Upward - Via e-mail
